To conclude my Sociology Major at Gettysburg College, my class and I have selected topics to do research on and create websites for our capstone course. The topic I selected to do research on is how males and females portray their emotions regarding mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic. I decided to examine my data by looking at Twitter tweets.

The research question being studied is gender identity on language regarding mental health in social media Twitter posts about the Covid-19 pandemic. The independent variable is the gender of the person creating the tweets regarding Covid-19. The attribute of determining one’s gender will be based on variables, including their name, bio, and profile picture. The language of expression on mental health is the dependent variable because what is being looked at is how gender differs from expressing emotions.

The goal of this research assignment is to see if gender has an effect on emotions. With Covid-19 being a relatable topic to all, I believed this would be a good subject matter to study. As someone who hopes to work in a mental health profession one day, this topic will help with the groundwork of understanding gender expression.
